Inspiration: Graffiti

Against my better judgment I have let some of my GCSE student choose graffiti as a topic for their Art exam.  In order to get a good mark they need to research widely, choosing to look at the less obvious sources. They must draw from life, and they must choose at least one artist to study.  They must not, use graffiti generator online, they will NOT get you a GCSE, they must not spend the next 7 weeks repeatedly designing a tag of their name.

I will post some profiles of famous graffiti artist.

This links to a site thats shows some different types of graffiti, if you chose this topic, read this link !

Painter: Caravaggio

Look proper painting ! When I first started studying art I was NOT at all interested in painting like this, but I was wrong. I saw one of his paintings in a gallery ( still cant remember which one it was) and it blew me away. Caravaggio’s characters loom at you out of the darkness, they are frighteningly life like, unlike many more restrained painting that were around in his time. His paintings, like most at the time were all scenes from the Bible or from Greek or Roman myth. His own personal life was as dark and mysterious as his paintings. When I tell my student not to use black in a painting, take a close look at these, no black, they are all deep blues or brown, no black ! His style of painting (stuff looming out of the darkness) is called Chiaroscuro.
